| | Equipmentally Speaking | | What kind of equipment does it take to produce top-notch, high-quality astronomy photos? Well, I'm not entirely sure, but here is some of the equipment I use to take astrophotos. PLEASE VIEW AT LARGE SIZE.

| | Moon Walking | | When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's amore!
When the stars make you drool just like a pasta fagiole, that's..well, that's when it's time to stop eating and get outside to gaze lovingly at Lady Luna! Now THAT'S amore!

| | Solar Storms in our Sky | | The massive coronal ejection from the Sun's Sunspot #486 region on 10/30/03, and another on 11/09/04, caused geomagnetic storms in Earth's atmosphere that each resulted in a few days of Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. I was fortunate enough to catch about 40 minutes of the show the day before Halloween, and about the same period of time on 11/09. Here are some photos of those wonderful experiences. |
| | Mercurious Moments | | The innermost planet to the Sun, Mercury moves through the skies as fast as its name suggests.
UPDATED 9/24/03 |
| | Venusian Visuals | | The second planet from the sun, Venus, is cloaked in clouds and is greenhouse superheated to temperatures that would melt even the most durable Volvo into a puddle of super-hot goo!
UPDATED 06/08/04 |
| | The Red Planet | | This album was created in the "Year of Mars", 2003, when Mars came closer to Earth than at any time in the past 60,000 years.

| | Jovian Giant | | The largest of the planets in our Solar System, Jupiter. The king of planets.
UPDATED 6/17/06 |
| | Rings and Things | | Considered the most striking and impressive planet in our Solar System, I give you Saturn, as best I can.
UPDATED 01/01/04 |
| | The 8th, no 9th planet- Neptune | | Depending on whether Pluto is in or out of Neptune's orbit, Neptune can be the 8th or 9th planet farthest from the sun. At 2.7 BILLION miles away, it's a long ways no matter how you slice it.

| | Meteors and Asteroids- Rocks in the Sky | | Meteors are usually grain-of-sand sized rocks and dust. They shoot through upper Earth's atmosphere at incredible speeds, flashing light as they burn, and they rarely make it to the ground.
About 35,000 asteroids have been discovered. I have "discovered" meteors (although the fame lasts about 2 seconds) but I have never discovered an asteroid (They are REALLY hard to see!)

| | Visitors from Oort | | It is theorized that beyond and surrounding the planets of the Solar System, there is a massive "cloud" of ice and debris. Named the "Oort cloud" after Dutch astronomer, Jan Hendrik Oort, it may reach out as far as halfway to our nearest star. From the Oort cloud, due to gravitational perturbations, comes the comets.

| | When Celestial Objects Collide | | Or when they get really close...at least from our perspective because they may be very large distances apart... but they look close ...from here anyways..Regardless, here is a study of when celestial objects line up and get close to each other.. at least visually.

| | Flashing Iridium Flares | | In 1997, a plan was enacted by Motorola to create a communication system of 77 satellites for cordless telephone use. Bankruptcy, and an ensuing buy out by the Pentagon and Boeing has kept an average of 66 satellites in orbit. At predictable times and coordinates in the sky, a fortuitous alignment of the Sun, one of the three satellite antennae, and the Earth, results in a blinding flash in the sky. Blinded by science!

| | A Constellation of Photos | | It was through the use of imagination that humans visualized lines from one star to another to create the various shapes of everything from bears, to mythological creatures, to parts of sailing ships. These imaginary configurations are referred to as constellations. There are 88 recognized constellations in the sky. Here are but a few of them.

| | Star Searching | | These massive balls of gas (of which our Sun is one) are the true stars in the Hollywood sense, of the Universe. Ranging from small white dwarfs, to smaller Neutron star, to even smaller Black Holes, to huge Red Giants, to super-hot Hyper-Novas, to warm Brown Dwarfs, to cold Black dwarfs, to non-spinning Black Holes, to Pulsars and Neutron stars that spin hundreds- perhaps thousands- of times per SECOND, to an incredible array of unusual celestial beasts that defy imagination...That is what a Star is.

| | Nebulous Investigations | | Throughout the Universe massive clouds of dust, gas and molecules persist. These clouds are called nebulas. If the gravitational attraction is sufficient, these elements of space begin to form a sphere that as it gains mass, it draws even more of the gas inward. It may eventually become a star, a planet, or one of many other objects that inhabit the Universe. It is from such circumstances that our Sun and Solar System was born.

| | Earthly Images | | ALthough I've been involved in photography for many years, most of my photos are tied up as slides (What a great idea THAT was!) So as I start to have them made into prints, I will add them to this album. I also hope to add any new photos I deem acceptable to this album. Non-astronomy stuff- enjoy...

| | The Mighty FALL! | | On the weekend of 10/11/03, we went camping at a local state park. The autumn colors were at their peak and the following photos try to show the splendor of my favorite season.
The photos have not been retouched and they are, as it was. Remember that the best photo quality is viewed in the "Large" format.

| | Hola from the Caribbean | | For 7 nights in January 2004, Mary and I indulged in a well-deserved vacation in Punta Cana on the Domincan Republic side of Hispaniola. Then...sigh..we had to come back. Of 400 photos taken, here are a few. |
| | Stratocumulus Society of Michigan | | The seeds were planted late in 2003, and from the seeds rose an astronomy observer's club based in (but not exclusive to) Michigan. Thusly, the Stratocumulus Society of Michigan was born!! The SSM consists of highly motivated and relatively intelligent astronomer-wannabes. Their duty- To scope, photo and observe all that exists in the night sky, and to fight for justice and the American way!!...OK, so I got a little carried away. But here we are anyways. :) |
| | SOARing High | | I attended the official dedication of the SOuthern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR) at the Biological and Physical Sciences building at Michigan State University on 4/17/04. Two breakthrough technologies were unveiled- the "Spartan Infrared Camera" which was soon to attached to SOAR; and the MSU Observation Room where views through the 4.1 meter SOAR mirror could be viewed in real time by anyone passing by in the building. Very cool.

| | Bay City ROCKS!! | | We musicians who make up the band, Rear View Mirror, were most fortunate to be asked to play in the Bay City River Roar Festival on 6/26/04. We warmed up the crowd for the popular rock band, Night Ranger, who had several 80's hits that included Sister Christian and Don't Tell Me You Love Me. This album on this date has only photos taken by Mary and myself, but it will soon be updated with photos from our professional photographer, David Loomis. The whole gig was INCREDIBLE!! |
| | The Sky's the Limit | | From clouds that make the sky look like it is on fire, to clouds that are just cool, I've got some here.

| | Gunnisonville Grads | | After 40 years and a few fortuitous, chance meetings, an effort was made to get all of the students who "graduated" from Gunnisonville Elementary school in 1966 back together again. We did good at tracking 'em down and about 10 of us met on a cool September day to talk about the good ol' days! |
