Joe Konz's Albums
Inaugural Indy Criterium Cycling Competition
The first Indy Crit race, held Aug. 21, 2010, on a looped 0.7-mile course with five turns in the heart of Downtown Indianapolis and backdropped by Monument Circle and the State Capitol, featured races in five categories encompassing skilled cyclists through small children. These images reflect the second half of the Masters 35/45/50 competition and the first portion of the men's 3/4 competition.
Vintage Base Ball Association
The Indianapolis Blues, Indianapolis Hoosiers, Mulberry Manglers, Batesville Lumbermen, Lockport (Ill.) Sleepers and St. Louis Unions participated in a Vintage Base Ball Association Regional Tournament at Garfield Park in Indianapolis on June 19, 2010. The teams play in 19th-century garb and used rules from the late 1880s as well. It was interesting to behold; some scenes reminded me a bit of the "Field of Dreams" motion picture.
Spring 2010
Spring means a return of color, blossoms and bulbs to the landscape. That's what these images attempt to convey. These were taken in the spring of 2010.
Naptown Roller Girls
The Tornado Sirens and Warning Belles are women's roller derby teams based in Indianapolis. On the evening of April 17, 2010, both teams competed in a double-header bout against teams from Ohio. The Belles defeated the Gang Green, and the Sirens bested the Ohio Roller Girls All-Stars. The bouts were played in the Pepsi Coliseum on the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.
Winter 2010
Indianapolis was hit with a snowstorm, featuring wet, heavy flakes, on Feb. 5, 2010. Anywhere from 5 to 8 inches fell, depending on where you lived. The snowfall images in this folder -- the ones where skies are gray and overcast -- were taken in the early afternoon of Feb. 5, about four hours into the snowfall. The aftermath images were taken early afternoon the next day, Feb. 6, when skies were sunny and bright.
Indianapolis Monumental Marathon and Half-Marathon
The second annual Indianapolis Monumental Marathon and Half-Mararthon was run Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, starting on West Washington Street in front of the State Office complex and finishing just west of the state capitol on Robert D. Orr Plaza. These images are from that shoot.
College Basketball - Butler vs. DePauw
This game was Butler's first of the 2009-10 season, a 77-45 win on Nov. 1, 2009, in Hinkle Fieldhouse at Butler. It was an exhibition game -- it didn't count in teams' official win-loss record -- but it would prove to be the launching pad of a cinderella season for Butler that ended with the Bulldogs taking a 25-game win streak into the NCAA national championship game -- played in their hometown of Indianapolis -- where they lost to Duke, 61-59. That loss was the last game for Butler sophomore Gordon Hayward, who made himself eligible for the NBA draft at the conclusion of the college season. You can see him (No. 20 in white jersey) in several images here.
College Football - Franklin vs. Trine
Franklin College, Franklin, Ind., came from 13 points behind late in the third quarter to defeat Trine University (Angola, Ind.) 30-29 at Faught Stadium, Franklin, on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009. Trine had not lost a regular-season game since October 2007 and entered the game ranked among the top 25 Division III college teams in the country. The win improved Franklin's record to 2-1 and dropped Trine to 2-1. These images were taken at that game, using a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens equipped with a 1.4 extender.

Irvington Annual Walk in the Park
Each year, on the second Sunday of August, the Irvington Guild of Artists, in conjunction with the Irvington Farmers Market, holds a festival of arts, crafts and music in Ellenberger Park, Indianapolis. These images were taken at two Walk in the Park festivals -- Aug. 13, 2006, and Aug. 10, 2008.
Communities - Metamora IN
Metamora in southeastern Indiana has built and nurtured its profile around the Whitewater Canal, established in 1838 and one of Indiana's 12 historic sites. It has what the town claims to be the only operating wooden aqueduct in the United States, a grist mill still in operation and a quaint but thriving merchants district of boutiques and novelty shops. The annual Christmas Walk is a monthlong observance in which the community dresses up the town in lights and decorations, toasting the season to be merry. These images were taken from visits to Metamora Dec. 5, 2009 (daytime), and Dec. 12, 2009 (nighttime).
Communities - Franklin, Ind.
Images from the city of Franklin, Ind., the seat of Johnson County, which is directly south of Indianapolis, the virtual center of Indiana.
Concerts - Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra
The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra performed in the Sunken Garden of Garfield Park on the evening of Aug. 14, 2010, the sixth consecutive hot and humid day in Indianapolis. The show was part of the Music in the Garden series organized by Friends of Garfield Park. Featured vocalists were Lydia McAdams and Rick Vale.
Concerts - The Brains Behind Pa
This folk-blues band from Indianapolis is inspired by the work of Bob Dylan and, in fact, arrived at its name from a line in the Dylan song "Maggie's Farm." The Brains Behind Pa -- featuring Bill Price and Gordon Bonham on guitar and vocals; Garry Bole on keyboards, mandolin and accordian; Jeff Stone on bass; and Jamey Reid (filling in for Jeff Chapin) on drums -- performed an intimate show at the Wheeler Community Arts Center in Indianapolis on the night of April 16, 2010. These images are from that show.
Concerts - Tad Robinson at Jazz Kitchen
The Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis threw a party for Tad Robinson to celebrate the release of his new CD, "Back in Style." These images were taken at the first of two shows Tad and his band performed the night of April 23, 2010.
Concerts - Tad Robinson at Eddy's
Tad, a five-time blues music awards nominee (including two 2007 W.C. Handy Blues Awards nominations for album and male vocalist of the year), performed with keyboardist Kevin Anker at Eddy's Neighborhood Bar & Grill at Geist in Indianapolis on Feb. 13, 2010. These images were taken at that performance.
Concerts - Living Proof
Living Proof is a seven-piece Indianapolis R&B band. On the evening of Jan. 30, 2010, at the Athenaeum Theatre in downtown Indianapolis, Living Proof recorded a video of the title track of their second album, "Feel Good Music," and followed that with a rollicking live show for a packed audience. These images are from the video shoot and the live show.
Concerts - Luke Austin Daugherty
Luke Austin Daugherty and his band performs at the Art Bank Studios and Gallery's triannual "Robbin' the Bank" program that is part of the First Friday Art Tours along the Massachusetts Avenue cultural district in downtown Indianapolis. These images were taken at the group's performance on Sept. 4, 2009, distinguished by audience-participation painting-by-feet-while dancing on a canvas spread out in front of the bandstand. Eventually, even a band member participated in the community canvas for charity (the Arthritis Foundation).
Concerts - Epic Fail
Epic Fail is a young rock band from the Eastside of Indianapolis that thrives on performing in front of people. The band played at a back-to-school rally at Garfield Park in Indianapolis on Aug. 1, 2009, with special lead vocalist Julie Young joining them for three covers -- AC/DC's "You Shook Me," Heart's "Barracuda" and Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll."
Concerts - whoa!tiger
On May 16, 2009, Indianapolis rock band whoa!tiger performed in the Johnson Memorial Hospital parking lot for a fundraiser of the Franklin Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society's signature annual awareness and fundraising activity that draws upon the whole community to participate and support.
Concerts - Cathy Morris - 06/18/05
Cathy Morris, an electric jazz violinist based in Indianapolis, and her band gave three free late-afternoon concerts in the Sunken Garden of Garfield Park, Indianapolis, in the summer of 2005. These images are from the first show in that "Music in the Garden" series, held on Saturday, June 18, 2005. The stage faced the west at a time when the sun stared Cathy right in the face. About a half-hour into the show, an audience member loaned her some sunglasses, which she wore the remainder of the performance.
Concerts - Cathy Morris - 07/15/06
In 2006, Cathy returned to the Sunken Garden for one late-afternoon, free concert, held on July 15, 2006. This time her ensemble included her brother, keyboardist Daryl Spurlock, bassist Steve Dokken and drummer Adam White.
Concerts - Cathy Morris - 08/29/09
Cathy performed at the White River State Park amphitheater the evening of Aug. 29, 2009. Accompanying her were brother Daryl Spurlock on keyboards, Steve Dokken on bass and Greg Artry on drums. Two things made the show stand out: A series of guest jazz performers joined her on stage for various numbers (no images of them) ... and a spontaneous bit of dancing, instigated by Cathy, in the green open area in front of the stage during an instrumental number early in the program.
Concerts - Wright Brothers Band
The Wright Brothers Band, based in Indianapolis, Ind., performed a free concert at the MacAllister Center of Performing Arts amphitheater in Garfield Park, Indianapolis, on Aug. 19, 2006. These images are from that show.

The nicely landscaped Downtown Canal is many things to many people, who use it for walks, runs, roller-blading, paddleboating (including corporate team paddleboat races) ... and inspirational photography.
Reflective photography
A look at the various reflections -- and reflective surfaces -- that can furnish interesting photographs.
Flora and Foliage
Macro images of tulips, orchids and other flowers as well as eye-catching foliage
Spring Bulb Show - 2009
These images were taken March 31, 2009, at the annual Spring Bulb Show at the Garfield Park Conservatory.
Winterscapes
The beauty and elegance of winter snowfall, including the deceptively dominant graytones in true color photographs, is the subject of this album.
Winterscapes - art textures
Winter scene images enhanced with art textures.
Autumn Vistas
Displays and arrays of brilliant fall colors, including a handul of spectacular backlighted trees.
Autumn Reds
The color red is a somewhat overlooked hue in the brilliant autumn spectrum. Not so here. Autumn reds are featured in this collection of photographs.
Architecture & Buildings
Verdant greens, tapestry-patterned skies and ocean blues aren't always what define beautiful landscapes. The marvel of architecture and spectacle of distinguished buildings plays a key role, too.
Portraiture
Images from various portraiture shots
Tines art
Images developed and inspired by tine figures (forks).
Miscellaneous
A collection of images that don't fit into the other categories. I'm likely to be tweaking -- adding and subtracting -- the contents of this folder quite frequently, so ... check back often.
